Partly because I graduated from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) I have been a student of the liberal arts programs from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) and believe that it is important to integrate education and studying art and other subjects. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist holding a PhD and an MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. The ethnomusicology degree program I joined at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It is possible to pursue many areas of interest is something that I truly appreciate. I really enjoy teaching undergraduates (majors and non-majors) which is why I've written three textbooks-Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) and graduate students. There are times when I am pursuing primarily academic activities and periods where I include administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group for Asian Studies in 1999, and now as Chair of the Department of Music again).
